This great institution, now known as the University College, was founded in the year 1834 by the Government of Travancore during the reign of his Highness
Sri Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, one of the most illustrious rulers of the former State of Travancore, renowned for his devotion and notable contributions to art and
culture. The classes were conducted in an old building located about half a mile to the south of the University College, on the premises where the Ayurveda College
stands today and was known as 'The Raja's Free School'. The school was moved to a new building constructed for the purpose on the premises where the University
College is now located in the following year and continued as a free institution till 1863-64. It was one of the earliest institutions in South India established under the
auspices of the Government for rendering education to the children of the State. In 1866, during the reign of His Highness Sri Ayilyam Thirunal Rama Varma Maharaja
of Travancore, School was raised to the status of a College and was affiliated to the University of Madras. It was named ' H.H. T he Maharaja's College' with Mr. John
Ross as the first Principal. The BA Chemistry course was started in 1884. The school section of the institution continued to function in the same premises till 1919.
In 1924 the Government decided to separate the Arts and Science Departments, The new institutions that came into being as result of the bifurcation were
called H.H. The Maharaja's College of Science and H.H. The Maharaja's College of Arts (situated at Thycaud). Later in 1942 the two institutions were rejoined and the
reunited College came to be known as the University College. The Post Graduate course in chemistry started in 1943. The centenary of the College was celebrated
flamboyantly in July 1966 and was inaugurated Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India.
In 1993, the Government decided to shift the Graduate courses in two phases. 1st year classes of the 11 B.A, Degree courses were shifted to the new
buildings for the Graduate Section at Kariavattom during 1993-94 and those of the B.Sc. Degree during 1994-95. Later in 1996, these courses were brought back from
University College Graduate Section, Kariavattom to this college. M. Phil courses in 12 disciplines were started during the academic year 1994-95. The University
College now comprises 20 postgraduate departments and 18 graduate departments with about 278 members of staff (Teaching and Non Teaching and over 3100
students in its roll). This College has been recognised by the University as a Research Centre for M. Phil and Ph.D Degree in 12 disciplines.
UGC has recognized University College as a Centre of Potential excellence (CPE) in 2004. National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has
accredited this college with A grade in 2010.
